DEI SPOTLIGHT
The BSD’s Office of Diversity & Inclusion recently concluded its mini-institute focusing on History & Context, one of the guiding pillars of their work. History & Context is partly about situating diversity, equity, and inclusion into larger sociocultural patterns. The institute wrapped with a bus tour led by Chicago historian Sherman “Dilla” Thomas and his company, Mahogany Bus Tours.
The tour offers a glimpse of Bronzeville and the South Side more broadly by focusing on historical realities that led to parts of the city being underdeveloped and the ways these conditions engendered a rich African American culture built by some of America’s literary, journalistic, and musical greats. Tour attendees saw the childhood home of Emmett Till, visited a monument dedicated to Ida B. Wells, and learned about jazz icon Louis Armstrong.
Dilla offers his insights into how those historical realities have created the great neighborhoods and cultures that surround our university today. The tour recognizes the beauty of Chicago’s South Side more than anything else, and Dilla tells attendees to not just be in the community but of the community, understanding just how much richness we get from the South Side, its history, culture, and people.
